This is a rare and unique exhibition showcasing the Society's collection of important documents, paintings, engravings and objects associated with the Amistad incident. Learn about an important piece of New Haven history. It began on a ship called the Amistad, used to transport 53 Africans to Cuba where they were to spend the rest of their lives as slaves. But before the ship reached its destination, the Africans took control of it in a bloody bid for liberty. Unable to lead the Amistad back to Africa, the men landed on Long Island. They were soon captured and brought to Connecticut to be tried for murder and mutiny. The trial of the Amistad Africans opened in January of 1840 in New Haven with Judge Judson presiding. After six days of testimony he stunned the public by rendering a decision in favor of the Amistad Africans. Funded in part by the Bayer Corporation and an anonymous donor. | ||
