DEPARTMENT OF STATE, Washington, September 16, 1839, SIR: I have the honor to acknowledge the receipt, at this department, of your
note of the 6th instant, regarding the case of the Spanish schooner "Amistad"
and cargo, together with the negroes found on board that vessel. Your letter was
immediately forwarded to the President of the United States for his consideration,
and no time will be needlessly lost, after his decision upon the demand it prefers
shall have reached me, in communicating to you his views upon the subject. JOHN FORSYTH.
