"Wax Figures," Colored American, June 27, 1840.
We last week visited the Amistad captives ; not the great originals, reader, but
their counterfeits, done in wax. They are exhibited at Peale’s Museum, and are well
worthy a visit. The figures are 29 in number, of life size, and they possess a fidelity
to nature which is truly astonishing.
We have never seen the originals, but have understood that they are perfect likenesses
: every muscle, every lineament of countenance is portrayed with all the appearance
of life.
They are to be removed next week to Boston, and we would advise our friends there
to visit the exhibition. Mr. S. Moulthrop, of New Haven, is the artist. A.
