Herald on Amistad Trial
|
| Description: |
Account of court proceedings in Hartford on Sept. 20, 1839. Attorney Roger Baldwin contends that the Africans are not property, and if not permitted to prove this, their most sacred rights are being violated; that they are subjects of another nation. District Attorney Holabird stated counsel for Africans couldn't interpose a plea because Africans were not defendants in case. Judge said plea would be receieved, however the only question the court would discuss was the locality of the capture of the Amistad. Contradicting testimony on this location given by several parties. No conclusion reached when court adjourned for the day. |
